COVID-19 will nevertheless end up as the nation’s third leading cause of death this year — behind the perennial leader, heart disease, and cancer.

Nearly 3.7 million babies were born in the U.S. in 2021, a 1% increase from 2020 levels, but still lower than before the coronavirus pandemic.
