Notre Dame and Navy open their seasons on Saturday with a game in Dublin, Ireland. The teams played in Ireland in 1996 and 2012.

That was not possible once Covid hit, though, as there were restrictions for traveling between the U.S. and Ireland until last year. Still, Notre Dame and Navy were determined to see whether a return game to Ireland was feasible. Aaron Horvath, a senior associate athletics director at Notre Dame and advisor to the school’s AD, Jack Swarbrick, remembers speaking with Swarbrick about two years ago while Covid was still disrupting every day life, not to mention sporting events.

As such, Anthony said the organizers worked with a consulting company to estimate the crowds that would come to watch a Notre Dame game in Ireland and the number of tourists who would visit, book hotels, eat at restaurants and spend money in other ways. They brought that information to the city and tourism agencies, who were impressed with what they heard.

Anthony said most of the people coming to the game are staying for a week and visiting multiple Irish cities. Anthony Travel has booked rooms for guests at 150 hotels throughout Ireland. Besides the game, there is a lot going on for fans in Ireland this week. Notre Dame is hosting more than 30 events, according to Horvath, ranging from cooperative research events, service projects, masses and luncheons. The University has a s strong presence in Dublin through its Global Gateway, which includes a study abroad program, internship opportunities, seminars, conferences and research collaborations.

“There’s a lot happening that really shows what an exciting event this is,” Anthony said. “Our tagline for this is much more than a game. American football in a foreign country doesn't always resonate, but they understand in Ireland that this is much more than a game.”
