The 83-year-old who was the voice of the Dallas Cowboys during their golden years is closing out his career.

Sports personality Verne Lundquist does an interview at the CBS compound during a practice round for the 2015 PGA Championship golf tournament at Whistling Straits., Nancy and Tonya, Tiger and the Golden Bear; before Happy Gilmore; before putting the exclamation point on a world record’s worth of iconic moments from a single sports broadcaster while simultaneously evolving into one of the most beloved in the history of microphones, Verne Lundquist pulled into a gas station in Fairfield, Texas.

“I got a little uppity,” Lundquist said Thursday by phone from Augusta. “I said, ‘Mr. Hearn, you are the voice of the Los Angeles Lakers. What about your dignity?’"“Son,” Hearn told him, “take the money, build a pool behind your house and move on with your life.” The 17 years at WFAA “changed everything for me personally,” he said. For one thing, it gave him access to the Cowboys. Tex Schramm hired him in ‘67 to host the Cowboys’ pre- and post-game shows on radio. Tex promoted him to No. 2 man in the booth, next to Bill Mercer, after Blackie Sherrod, king of Texas sportswriters, gave up his side gig not long after he was hit on the head by an icicle while waiting on a press box elevator in Pittsburgh.
