After area-round win, Memorial girls basketball striving for new heights
Memorial girls basketball coach Jyusef Larry was initially content with his team getting past the second round of the playoffs. Courtesy of Friday’s 63-54 Region III-6A area win over Seven Lakes at the Campbell Center in Aldine, the Mustangs are finally back in the regional quarterfinals. They play Tompkins at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Coleman Coliseum.
The Mustangs are 27-10. The wins tie the most in a single season for the program. They are coming off their second consecutive district championship, and fourth overall in the 43-year history of the program.“We’re just going to keep going,” senior wing Abigail Tomaski said. “We’re trying to make it as far as our program has ever made it. I think this is the year for us.”
When Seven Lakes was forced to adapt and close out harder on shooters, that opened driving lanes and attacks to the rim for Memorial. The Mustangs earned 19 free throw attempts, making 14.
