Gated community to rise in site of razed AMC movie theater in West Houston
Meritage Homes is planning to build energy-efficient townhomes and single-family houses in the former AMC movie theater site off Dunvale Road near Richmond and Westheimer.A slice of the silver screen is transforming into single-family homes as a new gated community rises in the site of a now demolished AMC movie theater in West Houston.
Meritage Homes, which describes itself as the seventh-largest public homebuilder in the U.S., then bought the 21.5-acre site in June 2021, according to Harris County deed records. The land was purchased for about $14.9 million, according to the commercial real estate data firm CoStar. The 136,154 square-foot building was constructed in 1996.Meritage is planning a new 243-home community at the location, bringing single-family urban living to an area surrounded by apartment complexes and retail.
There are two main styles of houses planned for the community: The Patio Collection, with 38’ x 72’ lots and up to 2,870 sq. ft. of living space per home; and the Townhome Collection, with 28’ x 72’ lots and homes with up to 2,047 sq. ft. of living space, according to an April 20 press release.
