It is too much for the heart. The body isn’t made for this kind of pain. How is it that those who suffer this terribly endure?Trudell was a Native American, a Santee Dakota, who became an activist for Native people during the 1970s. His life, never easy, took an impossibly painful turn in 1979. He had burned an American flag in protest on the steps of the FBI building in Washington, saying the flag was desecrated by the nation’s treatment of minorities.
It is easier, and for a newspaper editor probably more important anyway, to ask relevant questions with more direct answers that can maybe stop this from happening the next time.
The Trappist monk Thomas Merton once wrote, “Suffering has no power and no value of its own. It is only valuable as a test of faith.”
