It's been a record-breaking year for Super Netball, but the competition has been plagued by accusations of a toxic culture at the Firebirds and ongoing racism faced by Donnell Wallam. Now a new administration, and one former Diamond, are looking to change the game.

Donnell Wallam and Leesa Mi Mi were the only two First Nations athletes on full-time Super Netball contracts in 2024.It signals a turning tide for a code that has been in the spotlight over the last few years for financial woes,As the sport's administration recovers under new leadership, the code is looking to further address one of the game's biggest blights: the cultural challenges that have presented barriers for First Nations netballers to access and excel in netball pathways.

Wallam's comments highlight the importance of cultural safety in the club environment the Diamond 189 needed to make a decision on where to go next, while anThe Netty Life podcast Rinehart pulled the sponsorship before she had the chance to, and Wallam bore the brunt of an angry sports community who believed she had compromised the financial security of the game.

After establishing her First Nations Academy of Excellence to provide elite netball pathways in 2023 "It's a vital step towards creating inclusive and respectful environments where everyone feels valued and respected." Finnan-White and Joyce struck up a collegial friendship where Joyce could ask difficult questions and Finnan-White could provide context from her own lived experience.

"I think by asking that question and establishing those relationships, it's been able to give me the education of who I can ask and what land people are part of and what cultural ceremonies they might do, and how sometimes it's just how they perceive different environments," Parsloe said. "But this program has really just helped me connect and you know, made me very proud of who I am: a proud Aboriginal woman."

Netball Australia is also now investigating the Queensland Firebirds over the allegations of 'toxic culture'the Black Swans, appointment of First Nations engagement lead and Kamilaroi woman Ali Tucker-Munro in 2023, and further development of its First Nations rounds.
