The freshman missed some long throws against Louisiana-Monroe, something that needs to...
Freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers played well in his first start against Louisiana-Monroe but had trouble connecting on passes down the field. “Our vertical passing game has gotta come to life,” coach Steve Sarkisian said.AUSTIN — It’s probably unfair to call Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers’ recent brush with UT Parking & Transportation a bad omen. Spend even a modest amount of time on campus and those citation-happy foot soldiers will come for you, sooner or later.
Coach Steve Sarkisian wasn’t thrilled with the interception, which a rolling Ewers fired into heavy traffic on Texas’ opening drive. But the Ohio State transfer responded well in his first career start, offering glimpses of what once made him the nation’s most coveted high school recruit and reminders of how much room for growth there is.
But Texas is going to have to take some shots against 20-point favorite Alabama. That’s why both Sarkisian and Ewers have emphasized the need to polish up the vertical attack against a Crimson Tide defense that limited Utah State to 57 passing yards and seven first downs in Week 1. Worthy did break loose for a 19-yard gain up the seam against ULM, but he caught only one more pass for five yards on six total targets.
Those were the sorts of throws Ewers made look easy during his five-star days at Southlake Carroll. With some fine-tuning — more game experience, more film study and additional post-practice reps with Worthy, his roommate — that could soon be the case again at Texas.
