Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 10.Sheriff Country finally returned from its winter break with the midseason premiere episode,"The Crucible, Part 2.
" Picking up where the midseason finale's cliffhanger left off, Travis Fraley , has been shot, and Mickey Fox must defend her sheriff’s station from a brutal siege by the followers of Enoch Barlow , who was arrested by the FBI and is still being held in Mickey's custody at the start of the episode. Fortunately, the main cast makes it out of the ordeal alive, but the episode ends with a groan-inducing moment with Mickey kissing Travis, reaffirming their love and romantic relationship. Just as Fire Country uses relationship drama to its detriment, Sheriff Country has now effectively inherited the biggest problem of its flagship series. Mickey and Travis Are Back Together… Seriously?! In the midseason finale,"The Crucible, Part 1," Travis was looking to resume his relationship with his ex-wife, whom he divorced several years earlier. However, it's hard to root for Mickey and Travis' romance, considering Travis was responsible for ending their marriage. Not to mention, in the series premiere, Mickey discovers that Travis has been having an affair in secret with her own sheriff's deputy, Cassidy Campbell , which constitutes a major personal and ethical violation. Cassidy and Travis, thankfully, broke up later in the season, but soon after, Travis literally manipulated getting her into court over a traffic violation in an attempt to get back together. Travis confessing his undying love for Mickey comes off as shallow and insincere when, just a few episodes ago, he was begging Cassidy to reconcile. It's basically relationship whiplash with Travis in Sheriff Country. The ending of"The Crucible, Part 2" is frustrating after the writers spent most of the first season showing exactly why Mickey and Travis are bad for each other and should no longer be together. 'Sheriff Country' Has Inherited 'Fire Country's Biggest Flaw In its earlier seasons, Fire Country was largely held back by its heavy-handed relationship drama and soap-opera style subplots. Fortunately, some of those elements have taken a backseat more recently in Season 4, with Gabriela Perez going on a recruiting mission away from Edgewater, and Audrey James transferring out of Edgewater to a different station. However, the romantic melodrama involving Gabriela and Bode has been an ongoing issue since the series started. Now, Sheriff Country has inherited Fire Country's worst flaw, with the forced relationship soap opera aspects, specifically the love triangle with Mickey, Travis, and Cassidy, as well as Nathan Boone's marriage of convenience to his late partner's wife, Nora . The drama surrounding Boone was far-fetched, as it was suddenly revealed that Boone had a wife no one knew about. Later, it's revealed that Boone married her out of guilt over his late partner and to help Nora with her financial situation, so the marriage is initially a sham. After that, Boone and Nora decide to act upon their genuine feelings, and Boone now wants to start a real relationship with Nora. On top of that, Mickey's reigniting a relationship with Travis appears to be a massive mistake, since they are getting back together after trauma bonding over the near-death experience caused by the siege at the station. Much like Fire Country, the show's relationship antics appear forced and fail to make the characters more compelling and endearing. Also, plenty of other procedural dramas demonstrate that more stable romantic relationships can be well executed. Shows Like 'The Rookie' and '9-1-1' Prove That Stable Romantic Relationships Can Work on Television It's not that shows like Sheriff Country and Fire Country should be completely devoid of romance, but they tend to take their romantic subplots too far, detracting from the show's strengths. Not to mention, other procedural dramas, such as The Rookie or 9-1-1, have proven that stable romantic relationships can work in television shows, and they still find interesting and dynamic ways to bring in the drama and explore their relationships. For The Rookie, Angela Lopez and Wesley Evers , Nyla Harper and James Murray , and John Nolan and Bailey Nune portray incredibly stable couples across multiple seasons. Similarly, 9-1-1 has depicted strong, remarkably stable romances with Henrietta"Hen" Wilson and Karen Wilson , along with Robert"Bobby" Nash and Athena Grant . Although these relationships have their ups and downs, their problems do not seriously drag down their respective shows. Granted, in The Rookie, Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen were broken up for two seasons, but that subplot only reinforces that Tim and Lucy work better together as a couple. Meanwhile, Sheriff Country is getting too bogged down in Mickey's love life, between her fling with DEA agent Dawson Raines , and now she's back with Travis, even after quite a few of his many unlikable acts thus far in the first season. It's disappointing to see all the overbearing relationship melodrama dominating the show and following in Fire Country's footsteps.
