Yes, Hoynes has been doing baseball seemingly forever. For some readers, it’s hard to believe The Plain Dealer ever had a baseball writer before Hoynes, who took the job in 1985. But I did it from 1980-84. Hoynes actually began as a fulltime baseball writer with the News-Herald in 1983. “I never wanted to do baseball,” he said. “The writer was on the road all the time. The few times I covered it, the experience with players was not the greatest. I wanted to cover the Browns.”
“It can get to you,” he said. “I’ve written that a pitcher was ‘warming up in the dugout.’ I called Ellis Burks … ‘Ellis & Burks,’ like he was a law firm. I make a lot of dumb mistakes.” He did have problems understanding some guys just don’t want to talk after a game … Well, at least one guy … Albert Belle. That’s when the rugby player in Hoynes would come out. He’d go up to Belle to ask a question. Hoynes was polite. Belle sometimes was volcanic.
