A jury this week awarded more than $13 million to three women who were sexually assaulted while patients at a private psychiatric hospital in Ventura County.
The women sued the hospital and its parent company, Michigan-based Signature Healthcare Services, alleging that Valencia was hired despite a history of sex crimes and was not properly supervised while working at the facility. In 2000, Valencia, then 18, was convicted of statutory rape after he impregnated his 14-year-old girlfriend.
Feldman began his closing statements Aug. 6 with lyrics from “I Am Woman,” a 1971 song by Helen Reddy: “I am woman, hear me roar / in numbers too big to ignore,” he said. He connected Valencia’s crimes to patterns of abuse against women revealed during the #MeToo movement.Signature Healthcare Services operates more than a dozen acute psychiatric facilities in California, Illinois, Nevada and Texas.
He was responsible for accompanying patients to doctors’ appointments, checking vital signs and picking up dirty laundry, among other duties., including having sex with a patient at a health facility where he worked, rape of an incompetent person and penetration by a foreign object.
