Africentric beat Northland 56-13 Saturday at East to capture its eighth consecutive City League girls basketball championship.
. “We couldn’t let up on defense. That’s our style of play. We play fast. We play aggressive. We just want to get on people non-stop. This might be top-two all year when it comes how hard we played.”
Bowers scored 13 consecutive points during what turned out to be the game-deciding 17-4 run late in the first quarter. Nine of those came on 3-pointers, two came on a layup off her own steal and the other two were off a running 6-foot jumper. “We came in ready to play,” Bowers said. “I feel good catching and shooting, spotting up. Everything panned out today.”Northland was held scoreless for a stretch of 9 minutes, 49 seconds spanning the first to third quarters. By the time an Ayah Duffy 3-pointer snapped the Vikings’ drought 44 seconds into the second half, they trailed 42-9.“We played really well but I don’t even think this was our best,” said Africentric junior forward Natiah Nelson, who scored 11 points.
Kennedy Walker’s four points led Northland , which was making its 12th City final appearance in 14 seasons. Its only title came in 2012. “When you don’t get back on defense or box out correctly, not grab rebounds, it gets you beat early,” Vikings coach Renny Tyson said. “We’ve relied on all of those things all season and it’s unfortunate we didn’t do that today. Africentric just outworked us.”
