The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries announced that Africanized Honeybees have been found in Jackson and St. Clair counties.

Officials said both finds were feral swarms collected by local beekeepers and have been euthanized to protect Alabama’s honeybees. Officials are setting up traps within a five-mile radius of the detection sites to capture and identify any futher presence of the species. Beekeepers in those areas are also being contacted to report any suspicious bee activity.

“Our goal is to protect both our residents and the health of our local bee populations,” said Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries Rick Pate. “We are working diligently to monitor the situation and taking necessary actions to prevent the spread of these aggressive bees.” The public is asked to report any suspicious bee activity as Africanized Honeybees can be highly defensive and pose a threat to humans and animals.Watch the latest WAFF 48 news, sports & weather videos on our YouTube channel!
