of K-pop’s origins and contemporary sound. Fatou made her idol career happen. The polyglot — she speaks English, French, Korean, German, and Dutch — came to K-pop through SHINee, before moving from Belgium to Korea to pursue her career. As a dark-skinned Black woman who wasn’t afraid to express herself while pursuing the life she wanted, Fatou quickly gained a following as an idol and became a source of hope for those who often don’t get to see themselves represented in K-pop.

Fatou’s group, Blackswan, first debuted under DR Music in 2020. They had rebranded from their previous name Rania , and even titled their debut albumas a way to pay homage to the old version that had become new. Since then, the group has done a Korean Travel Series with the Korean Cultural Center of Belgium and introduced two new members, and Fatou, now 27, has made history.

From appearing on Youtube shows to disprove stereotypes about Black people, to making solo appearances that show her unfiltered personality, Fatou’s star power is on the rise. She’s a much needed breath of fresh air, taking up space in an industry largely inspired by Black art.sat down with Fatou over Zoom to discuss what motivated her to become an idol, what she’s learned from the journey, and what to expect from her solo debut.
