Sen. Dan Sullivan's speech during the second day of AFN included his take on what's being done at the federal level to empower Native communities.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – As part of the second day of this year’s Alaska Federation of Natives convention in Anchorage, Sen. Dan Sullivan , R-Alaska, talked about some of the efforts being made at the federal level to help empower Alaska Native communities, along with some of the work that still needs to be done.
“This won’t happen overnight,” Sullivan said, “but you have my commitment that we will continue to work our hearts out on getting our salmon back in our rivers, for our children, our children’s children.” Rounding out his speech, Sullivan spoke directly to Alaska Native veterans in the audience, saying he and Murkowski are working to renew the Alaska Native Vietnam Era Veterans Land Allotment Act through what’s being termed an “Extension and Fulfillment Act of 2024.”
Additionally, Sullivan said a resolution passed unanimously by the Senate commends Vietnam veterans for their courage and sacrifice and urges formal acknowledgment of and apology for the mistreatment of Vietnam veterans. It also calls for increased education in schools about their courage and sacrifice.
