Joseph George was taken into custody June 2 at 6:33 p.m. and booked into Travis County Jail on a first-degree felony murder charge. May 30 when a city trash truck driver began loading a can in the 4400 block of Pack Saddle Pass and watched a body fall out.

The affidavit says investigators pieced together a timeline using footage from residential cameras, business surveillance systems and CapMetro buses. Video from the early morning hours of May 29 showed a thin white male with a "distinct gait" moving a trash can from Pack Saddle Pass to Western Trails Boulevard and back again. A metal bar was also visible in the suspect's hand in at least one clip.

A 911 caller reported seeing a person experiencing homelessness moaning near Redd Street and Pack Saddle Pass, with another person placing a trash can near him. According to the affidavit, the caller told detectives they observed only one person near the trash can.

George was identified June 1 when a color surveillance image was circulated to Austin patrol officers and Travis County Constable's Precinct 3 deputies, who spotted him that same day near the 4400 block of Menchaca Road wearing the same outfit captured on video days earlier. In an interview with detectives, George admitted to moving the trash can to the crime scene and confirmed he had a metal bar with him.

He said he loaded Vo's body into the trash can, returned it to Pack Saddle Pass, covered the body with trash bags and used water from a nearby business to wash blood from the crime scene. George told investigators he had been paid $50 by an unknown man to move the body, and that the same man had killed Vo after an earlier confrontation. Detectives said the surveillance footage did not support that account.

No second person was observed with George at any point during the relevant time period.
