AEW Fight Forever captures what made Nintendo 64's wrestling games so special, but is curiously missing some of the features of the old games that inspired it. Read grmartin's review.

to AKI’s earlier WCW games like. Sure, AEW’s game has the kind of creation suite that was lacking in that classic, but, at least not yet. I wouldn’t call a game that’s so fundamentally enjoyable a disappointment, by any means, butstill feels thinner than it should, and there’s enough that should be here that isn’t that the inevitable complaints shouldn’t be dismissed as nitpicking.gets right.

Every Road to Elite story begins the same, with your wrestler fighting through the original Double or Nothing’s Casino Battle Royale in hopes of winning a spot in the very first AEW World title match. Depending on that outcome you’ll move on to one of three possible storylines for the first of four three-month pay-per-view cycles. There are three potential routes for each of these four blocks, and they all depend on how you perform during the previous one.

The nature of that block system means that you’ll never know exactly how your wrestler’s story will progress over the year, but after playing through it a few times you’ll start to recognize a block’s story beats until the next pay-per-view. That can grow a little tiresome—I’ve had my luggage stolen at the airport like four times now—but the block structure also ensures Road to Elite isn’t the exact same story every time you play it.

It’s odd that a game trying hard to be a “spiritual successor” to a game from 23 years ago would ultimately havefeatures. There’s really no excuse for it, and unless those options are eventually introduced their absence will always stick out. At the momentwon’t let you create your own events, and forces you to recycle the same scant physical attributes across your create-a-wrestlers, and both facts are a bummer.

The game’s also missing a number of notable stars from AEW’s massive roster. It doesn’t really feature anybody who joined the company after the fall of 2021, so no Keith Lee, Swerve Strickland, Toni Storm, Hook, Saraya, or Danhausen. Jamie Hayter, whose relationship with the company stretches back to 2019, and who has been a regular since the summer of 2021, is inexplicably absent.
