They greatly limit gas-phase thermal conduction by restricting collisions between molecules. The extremely small pore size also prevents bulk gas movement. Thus, it effectively eliminates convective heat transfer within the material. Heat conduction through the solid phase is also minimal, as the solid backbone of an aerogel is ultra-thin and discontinuous.
