Founded by three MIT alumni, Lightmatter aims to revolutionize chip communication and calculation using photonic technologies.

Lightmatter’s Passage chip utilizes light’s speed and bandwidth benefits, akin to fiber optic cables, for efficient processor interconnection.Lightmatter leverages light's speed and bandwidth to connect processors, mirroring fiber optic cables' data transmission over long distances.

is made possible by our ability to fit ever-smaller transistors onto a chip. Experts opine that strategy is finally reaching its limits. ascent to prominence has contributed significantly to the recent explosion in demand for processing power, which is not showing any signs of slowing down. Now, by reimagining the chip’s lifeblood, Lightmatter, a firm formed by three MIT alumni, is planning to advance the domain of computing. The company uses light, in addition to energy, for data processing and transfer. According to the team, both photons and electrons are used by the company to power its first two devices, an AI-focused processor and an interconnect that makes data transfer between chips easier. The team’s focus lies in resolving two fundamental issues: the communication methods among chips and the techniques for conducting AI calculations. Through their initial offerings, Envise and Passage, they aim to tackle both of these challenges head-on. The Envise chip from Lightmatter combines the aspects of computing that electrons are good at, like memory, with the abilities ofSeveral calculations can be done simultaneously with photonics because the data is being received in several light hues. “In one color, you could have a photo of a dog. In another color, you could have a photo of a cat. In another color, maybe a tree, and you could have all three of those operations going through the same optical computing unit, this matrix accelerator, at the same time. That drives up operations per area, and it reuses the hardware that’s there, driving up energy efficiency,” said Nicholas Harris, CEO and co-founder of Lightmatter, in a Passage links processors by utilizing the latency and bandwidth benefits of light, much like fiber optic cables do to transmit data across great distances. According to the team, it also allows chips to function as a single processor as large as entire wafers. The huge server farms that support cloud computing and AI systems like ChatGPT rely heavily on information sent between CPUs.Lightmatter is also focusing its development on boosting computing’s energy efficiency, which is necessary to meet growing demand without significantly increasing power usage. “By 2040, some predict that around 80 percent of all energy usage on the planet will be devoted to data centers and computing, and AI is going to be a huge fraction of that. When you look at computing deployments for training these large AI models, they’re headed toward using hundreds of megawatts. Their power usage is on the scale of cities,” said Harris. For widespread implementation, Lightmatter is presently collaborating with cloud service providers and chip manufacturers. The team highlights that the company’s silicon-based technology can be produced by current semiconductor fabrication facilities without requiring significant process modifications. “We’re going to continue looking at all of the pieces of computers to figure out where light can accelerate them, make them more energy efficient, and faster, and we’re going to continue to replace those parts,” said Harris. As time progresses, the team’s objective is to develop the next generation of computers, all centered around the utilization of light.Trump asked CIA to create fake social media accounts to troll China
