Adrien Brody won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in 'The Brutalist' and delivered an unforgettable speech that lasted over five minutes, setting a new record for the longest Oscar acceptance speech.

Golden-Age actress Greer Garson previously held the record for the longest Oscar speech, speaking for five minutes and 30 seconds in 1943 when she accepted the award for best actress for Mrs. Miniver. Sadly, no footage of Garson's speech exists. But Adrien Brody broke that record with a speech lasting 5 minutes and 40 seconds, a feat achieved 80 years later. Brody's lengthy speech was likely influenced by his awareness of the fleeting nature of success in acting.

The 51-year-old actor frequently referenced his belief that he might never win another Oscar. 'Acting is a very fragile profession,' he said. 'It looks very glamorous and in certain moments it is, but the one thing that I’ve gained having the privilege to come back here is to have some perspective. No matter where you are in your career, no matter what you’ve accomplished, it can all go away.'One reason for Brody's extended speech was that he was almost cut off before its completion. Two-thirds of the way through, the orchestra began playing him off. 'I’m wrapping up, please, please, please, I will wrap up,' he pleaded as the music intensified. 'Please turn the music off. I’ve done this before, it’s not my first rodeo. Thank you.' Ironically, this wasn't Brody's first near-cutoff during an Oscar speech. In 2003, when he first won an Oscar, he unexpectedly kissed presenter Halle Berry—Berry playfully returned the favor on the red carpet at the 2025 Oscars—and was instructed to wrap up before finishing. 'One second, please. One second. Cut it out. I got one shot at this,' Brody said during his 2003 speech. 'I didn’t say more than five names, I don’t think.' This time, Brody left no name unsaid. He thanked his partner, Georgina Chapman, who held his chewed gum as he accepted his award. He expressed gratitude to The Brutalist director Brady Corbet and Corbet's wife, The Brutalist co-screenwriter Mona Fastfold, for their contributions to independent film and their unwavering spirit. He also thanked CAA, A24, Focus Features, and Universal.Despite his rambling, Brody concluded his speech with sincerity and emotion, connecting both The Pianist and The Brutalist to the enduring traumas of war, systematic oppression, and antisemitism and racism. 'I’m here once again, to represent the lingering traumas, and the repercussions of war and systematic oppression, and of antisemitism, and racism,' he said. Upon finishing, Brody seemed to realize the length of his speech. 'Okay, I’ll get out of here, I love you, I appreciate you all,' he said, concluding his remarks. 'Let’s fight for what’s right, keep smiling, keep loving one another, let’s rebuild together. Thank you.' Congratulations to Brody on his best actor win and his new record. May it stand for another 80 years
