The administration asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to decide whether President Donald Trump can block his critics on Twitter

“The result of the court of appeals’ novel ruling will be to jeopardize the ability of public officials — from the President of the United States to a village councilperson — to insulate their social-media accounts from harassment, trolling, or hate speech without invasive judicial oversight,” the DOJ said.

The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University filed the suit on behalf of seven people whom Trump had blocked after they posted comments criticizing the president. Should the high court agree to take up the case, the justices would be unlikely to hear the appeal or make a decision until next year.
