The Anti-Defamation League has lodged a federal complaint alleging that a Jewish student at Southern Hills Middle School in Boulder, Colorado, faced escalating antisemitic bullying, physical assaults, and a hostile environment over two years, and that the school district failed to adequately respond in violation of civil rights law.

The Anti-Defamation League has filed a federal civil rights complaint against the Boulder Valley School District , alleging that a Jewish student endured sustained and severe antisemitic harassment at Southern Hills Middle School with insufficient response from school authorities.

The complaint, submitted to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, details a pattern of verbal abuse, physical assaults, and a hostile environment that the student faced during his seventh and eighth grade years. According to the filing, the harassment included classmates attempting to play a game called "Jew touch tag," calling the student "dirty" and "contaminated," and later, a physical assault where a classmate used a Chromebook charging cord as a lasso, throwing it around the victim's neck and dragging him backward while shouting antisemitic slurs.

That incident prompted a police investigation and a juvenile court summons for the attacker, who received a one-week suspension. Despite a subsequent no-contact order, the harasser violated it immediately. Additional episodes involved other students telling the victim that "Hitler should have killed all the Jews," giving Nazi salutes, and engaging in Holocaust-related mockery. The complaint asserts that school officials failed to remedy the situation, instead shifting the burden onto the student to avoid his harassers.

This led the student to stop wearing his Star of David necklace, withdraw from basketball, skip a field trip, and eventually be withdrawn from the school entirely by his parents in late April over safety concerns. The ADL argues the district violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by not providing a meaningful response despite multiple notifications from parents since November 2024. The organization is calling for mandatory antisemitism training, policy reviews, stronger reporting mechanisms, and a zero-tolerance enforcement.

The district has declined to comment on ongoing litigation but stated it takes such allegations seriously and is working on improvements
