One Runner's World shoe tester hopes this new racing shoe helps him earn a US Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifier.
that got the running media and industry talking—the $500 shoe weighs less than 5 ounces and Adidas claims it was “designed specifically for race day, with the purpose to race at your fastest – one race, all in.”
Why Trevor? Simply put, the guy has wheels. Here are his bona fides: He ran at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pa., about a 10-minute drive fromheadquarters, earning all-state honors at 800 and 1600 meters. He went on to run at Princeton University, where he was Ivy League champ at 1000 meters and the mile, then he ran a fifth year at the University of Texas at Austin, winning a Big XII championship in the 3000 meter steeplechase. His college PRs are 3:39.90 for 1500 meters and 8:46.
It has a big stack—all super shoes are going to have tall stack height—but slipping them on, they’re so much lighter than what we’re used to these days. It just really feels odd, honestly. And with this mystery around they might only last 30 miles or 50 miles—whatever they say—I’m not going to waste some of my steps by just stepping around or showing off to a friend. I’m going to save them for what I need them for.
Jeff: Would you have worn the Kinvara Pro for this workout if you didn’t have the Evo 1? Or would you have gone with something else? No, I would’ve worn a super shoe for this workout. But, knowing that I wanted a couple miles in these shoes before race day, I kind of planned around that and just built in an opportunity to swap shoes.
And then, even though it’s the last thing I'm commenting on, the third factor is probably the most jarring: the feel of the upper. While under your foot you’ve got this squishy, softer, and bouncier foam than typical and a favorable geometry that feels really good, the upper is insane. It genuinely feels like there is no upper. I couldn’t believe it at first.
