In a heartfelt tribute, Tottenham-born Adele expressed her grief, and emphasised the need for justice. “I think that this year more than ever there has never been a more appropriate time for us to truly exercise camaraderie and compassion and open-mindedness and persistence,” she said, adding: “Persistence for answers. Persistence for action.”
Adele has been a longstanding supporter of those affected by the Grenfell disaster, and visited the bereaved in the days following the fire. At a fundraising concert in 2017, the singer shared her anger at the way the government had responded to the incident, and told the audience: “No information is getting through, people feel helpless.” Stormzy has been similarly vocal about the treatment of victims, and also joined Sunday’s virtual tribute.
The online event, which was streamed on the Grenfell United pressure group’s YouTube channel on Sunday, took the place of the annual Silent Walk that has honoured victims on past anniversaries. The founder of Justice4Grenfell, Yvette Williams, held the first walk on 17 June 2017, just 3 days after the fire. Since the fire, residents of the community have assembled on the 14th of every month until January this year, after which coronavirus became an obstacle to the gatherings.
