Chicago Cubs manager David Ross said Adbert Alzolay will be used out of the bullpen once he is activated from the 60-day injured list this weekend. 'I’m just going to let him get up here and show us what he can do without a whole lot of expectations.”
NEW YORK — More than a year later, the outing still resonates with Chicago Cubs manager David Ross.
The Cubs return home to face the Colorado Rockies beginning Friday after completing a three-game sweep of the Mets with a 6-3 victory Wednesday. A six-run first inning provided enough support for left-hander Drew Smyly, who continued to be locked in. Smyly allowed two runs in five innings and owns a 2.23 ERA in eight starts since Aug. 1.Three consecutive full-count walks loaded the bases in the first. Two-run doubles by Yan Gomes and P.J.
Alzolay thrived in relief last September, when he posted a 1.40 ERA — three earned runs in 19⅓ innings — while striking out 21 and walking only two in eight games. His appearance in Minnesota resonated with Ross and identified how Alzolay can be successful as a reliever by maximizing his strengths. “I know he’s constantly trying to evolve. We’re an organization that tries to make guys better. So I’m just going to let him get up here and show us what he can do without a whole lot of expectations.”
