The hire suggests City Hall is taking a sexual assault claim against the mayor very seriously.
The city has hired outside counsel to defend Mayor Eric Adams from a lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault, but he will not have to pay. | Ed Reed/Mayoral Photography OfficeNEW YORK — City Hall has hired a celebrity lawyer to represent Mayor Eric Adams in a lawsuit accusing him of sexually assaulting a fellow city employee in 1993. And while taxpayers are footing the bill for the high-profile attorney, City Hall said it is getting a discount.
However, a spokesperson for the city law department said they will be charged less than one-eighth of that cost: $250 an hour for work by partners and $175 for work by associates. The spokesperson declined to provide the contract to confirm those rates and the terms of the deal.
“In certain cases, the Law Department retains outside firms to provide assistance during litigation,” they said in an emailed statement. “We retained the firm of Quinn Emanuel to serve as co-counsel to assist us in representing the city and the mayor in this case to ensure the Law Department can maximize its existing resources on our numerous other matters.”
“They’re going to have to deal with all of the publicity and people standing in the hallway taking photographs shouting out questions,” if it goes to trial, he said. “He’s used to dealing with celebrity cases.”
