Mohamed Bahi, former liaison to the Muslim community for Mayor Eric Adams, is expected to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in connection with the federal investigation into Adams' 2021 campaign.
Mohamed Bahi , former liaison to the Muslim community for Mayor Eric Adams , is set to plead guilty to a conspiracy charge in connection with the federal investigation into Adams' 2021 campaign. Prosecutors revealed in a court filing on Friday that Bahi intended to plead guilty, identifying him and Erden Arkan, a Turkish American construction firm owner, as co-conspirators in the case against the mayor. Arkan had already pleaded guilty to fraud last month.
\Prosecutors accused Bahi in October of instructing individuals who had made illegal straw donations to Adams' campaign to lie to federal investigators. Straw donations involve contributions made in someone else's name to circumvent fundraising limits, geographic restrictions, or other regulations. Federal investigators also alleged that Bahi deleted his Signal app, an encrypted messaging service he used to communicate with Adams, when they searched his home last summer. \Bahi's impending plea could signal a significant escalation in the government's investigation into the mayor, according to Daniel Richman, a Columbia Law School professor and former prosecutor in New York's Southern District. While the letter doesn't specify whether Bahi is cooperating with federal authorities, Richman noted that such filings often indicate cooperation. If Bahi does cooperate, it would likely strengthen the government's case against Adams. Prosecutors from the Southern District of New York have previously hinted at the possibility of bringing additional charges against the mayor. Last week, The New York Times reported that Justice Department officials were discussing the potential to drop charges against the mayor, a move considered highly unusual given the case's advancement, according to legal experts. A trial date is scheduled for April 21.
