Making friends, feeling isolated from classmates, and navigating relationships with teachers are hurdles that many students face. These experiences can leave young people feeling disconnected and overwhelmed.offers school-based prevention services that address mental health and behavioral challenges by offering students the tools and support they need to build meaningful connections and foster a more positive school experience. “From the district lens, Concord offers a needed layer of support for students and families regarding behavior and mental health,” said Jessie Martin, director of student well-being for Westerville City Schools. “The hope is any service like this helps student achievement.” In Westerville, Concord serves students K-12 in select schools through individual sessions, small groups, and classroom lessons that are tailored to grade level and student needs. Last year, Concord worked with 2,849 students in the district, said Alex Caughell, manager of school-based services for Concord. Concord prevention programming focuses on topics that include emotional regulation, stress management, and conflict resolution skills that evolve as students mature. When it comes to students’ mental health, Concord addresses common issues like anxiety and feelings of loneliness. Techniques like breathing exercises and coping skills give them practical tools to calm their minds, stay focused, and navigate their day-to-day struggles. “We typically see the same kinds of needs every year, so in the first semester of school we’ll run a small group for new students, groups for how to function in the classroom successfully, as well as groups for how to build and maintain friendships,” Caughell said. At every grade level, Concord makes sure school counselors, teachers, and parents are active participants in the prevention programming process for a child. “We reach out to parents, teachers, and counselors to make sure a student is showing progress in school or at home, and if there are other concerns, we work with them on next steps, like if a child needs a higher level of care than our prevention,” Caughell said. Through an evaluation form students fill out at the beginning and end of services, and a post-survey parents and teachers take about a child’s services, Caughell said 100% of students showed improvement in at least one of their individualized prevention program focus areas. Caughell attributes the successful implementation of Concord’s prevention services in part to the relationship the agency has with the district. “The district is always open to hearing how we can be creative in serving the kids, and I always appreciate that,” she said. “This is a space where we can be really helpful in figuring out how to meet children’s needs, and I love knowing that everybody is at the table trying to figure out how to get the most kids the most help.”
