Adam Scott recalls an inexplicable snub during his time as a new and young actor filming Boy Meets World. A coming-of-age sitcom that helped define its era and teen culture overall, Boy Meets World ran for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000.
The iconic show followed central protagonist Cory Matthews from adolescence to adulthood, ending with Cory’s departure from Philadelphia to intern in New York. The show later spawned the sequel series Girl Meets World, which featured both Cory and Danielle Fishel’s Topanga Matthews as the lead character’s parents, and ran from 2014 to 2017 on Disney Channel. Scott then approached Strong to say congratulations; while going in for a hug, Strong then pushed him off and ran away, seemingly weirded out by Scott. A smooth-talking bully, Scott’s Griff was memorable for using his charm and wits to escape obligations and punishments. He accepts Joey and Frankie — formerly loyal to Harley — as his lackeys and makes enemies with Mr. Feeny . His antics included paying a student to pose as him during classes, arranging after-school hours fights, and stealing stationery. After Harley returns and Joey and Frankie decide to quit their lackey work, Griff walks off unfazed, marking his last appearance. In Girl Meets World, his character is referenced in an award given by Cory, titled the “Griff Hawkins Totally Cool Award.” Portraying an ambiguous character who is both likable and infuriating, Griff was the first indicator of Scott’s undeniable talent.
