ESPN's Adam Schefter was roasted on social media after he reported some false information about San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey.
Adam Schefter is arguably the top NFL insider in the industry, so when he makes a mistake, it’s typically hard for him to live it down. Some football fans still harbor resentment toward Schefter for his infamous “Mr.
editor” scandal a few years back — an incident where he sent a full draft of a story to then-Washington Redskins president Bruce Allen asking him to point out “anything that should be added, changed, tweaked” before concluding with the phrase “Thanks, Mr. Editor, for that and the trust.” Schefter is still the king of breaking NFL news, but his reputation certainly isn’t what it once was. So when the ESPN insider reported on Thursday a nugget of information about San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey that turned out to be untrue, Schefter was raked over the coals on social media. As it turns out, Adrian Peterson and Joe Burrow were also nominated for three awards, so McCaffrey would be the third. The longtime insider was promptly hit with a community note, but it didn’t stop there. While the community note was embarrassing in itself for Schefter, things got worse for him once users started ripping into him in the comment section. “🤦🏼♂️ Did he post this as a clickbait just get reposts calling out his ignorance? He’s no more than a tabloid reporter if so,” one fan replied. “So cool how ESPN's lead NFL reporter literally just posts random texts he gets from agents under his own name without doing even a google search. what a chump. sports journalism is a joke,” scoffed another fan. He is the definition of a mouth piece, talking head, nobody. He literally just ‘says stuff’ all day long. ‘Is believed to be’ and just isn’t. Community noted hard💀,” one user mocked. “The leading NFL insider getting this wrong should be embarrassing for ESPN,” remarked another. “’Is believed’???? you’re a reporter. Report! Is he or isn’t he? Don’t give us some ‘well offhand I think so, but I haven’t double checked to be certain,’” one fan posted. “This is just blatantly false, goodness Adam,” another fan wrote. “Absolute fraud of a ‘journalist,’” sneered one user.
