Memang tidak mudah sentiasa dapat membezakan kehendak Tuhan dengan kehendak diri. Ini adalah pergelutan diri kita seumur hidup. Selalunya kita lebih mengikuti kehendak diri, kepentingan dan cinta diri kita. Dalam diri kita, ungkap Paulus, memang ada sahaja yang tidak baik . Semua itu akibat dari kedosaan diri kita, sebagai kenyataan dari misteri kerapuhan diri kita, sesuatu yang melekat pada diri kita.

Katekismus Gereja Katolik kemudian menggambarkannya demikian, “Kalau Dia telah ‘menentukan’ sesuatu sebelumnya dalam rencananya yang abadi, Dia turut memperhitungkan juga jawaban setiap orang atas rahmat-Nya” .
