Study shows that 8% of athletes have persistentsymptoms after contracting COVID-19

guidelines were followed for reporting of this review. The protocol for this review was prospectively registered in the PROSPERO database .Eligibility criteria were defined according to the Population, Exposure, Outcome and Study design. Studies were eligible if they included professional, amateur or collegiate athletes with COVID-19; presented data on symptoms/sequalae during and after the acute phase of infection and had an observational design.

Two independent reviewers performed the data extraction of included studies using a standardised data extraction form and compared the extracted data for consistency. All inconsistencies were resolved by discussion between the two reviewers.

Pooled estimates of asymptomatic, mild, moderate or severe cases; presence of postacute symptoms; type of acute and postacute symptoms and myocardial involvement were obtained using random-effect models to account for heterogeneity across individual studies and presented as event rate and 95% CI. Heterogeneity was examined as between-study variance and calculated as the Istatistic measuring the proportion of variation in the combined estimates due to study variance.
