Acura marks its 40th anniversary by unveiling the Integra 40 Racer, a track-focused tribute to its inaugural model. Based on a first-generation Integra chassis, the racer boasts a rebuilt engine, performance upgrades, and a classic aesthetic. The car pays homage to the brand's racing heritage and will debut at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Acura is turning 40 years old today, and Honda's premium brand is celebrating its midlife crisis by building a track-focused homage to its inaugural model: the Integra . The luxury offshoot of Honda officially began operations on March 27, 1986, and initially offered the sporty Integra coupe and plush Acura Legend sedan.

While the Legend went on to earn the respect of figures like Ludacris, the Integra quickly amassed a strong following amongst enthusiasts, enabling it to enjoy four generations of domestic sales. Acura's newly unveiled Integra 40 Racer pays its respects to the model that paved the way.Built on a pristine first-generation Integra chassis, the Integra 40 Racer is powered by a rebuilt D16A1 engine with a Monsoon ECU, coil‑on‑plug conversion, and a custom Borla exhaust. The automaker didn't specify how much power the Integra 40 Racer puts down, but we do know it is fed through a 5-speed manual transmission and a Torsen-style limited-slip differential. The 'Integra 40' name pays tribute to the brand's first race car—the Comptech Integra No. 48—and its consecutive IMSA International Sedan Series Manufacturers' and Drivers' Championships from 1987 to 1990.Naturally, dynamic improvements were the focus of Acura's build. Tein coilovers, an adjustable panhard bar, a manual steering rack, manual brakes, and upgraded brake pads and lines make up the majority of the Integra 40's improvements. A set of 14-inch Mugen wheels laced with semi-slick Yokohama tires makes the track-focused Integra look period-correct. Acura also invested in a Blackbird Fabworx roll cage and proper OMP seats with six-point harnesses. Outside, the Integra 40 Racer is slathered in Rio Red Metallic paint, a 1980s-era colorway from Acura; the interior and engine bay of the track-focused build features a Quartz Silver hue, making it appear stripped out.'As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Acura brand, we're not just honoring our history, we're accelerating toward a future that will continue to be defined by daring innovation, a deep commitment to Acura customers and our precision crafted performance brand DNA,' Mike Langel, assistant vice president of Acura national sales, said in a statement.Of course, Acura's legend has only grown richer since the first-generation Integra launched. Models like both generations of mid-engine NSX and the modern Integra Type S have cemented the automaker as a player in multiple sports car markets—but the Integra 40 Racer, which will debut at the 51st Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 17-19, makes clear Acura has no plans to forget where it all started.
