In a press conference, SAG-AFTRA officially calls a strike, joining the WGA on the picket lines as they fight for fair wages for actors.
SAG-AFTRA is officially calling a 2023 actors strike. The union, which represents actors, has been negotiating a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers since June, but the contract expired at midnight on July 13. The issues they were attempting to negotiate revolved around receiving residuals for streaming content and regulating the use of artificial intelligence.
During a press conference streamed live by SAG-AFTRA, it was announced that the union would be officially calling the strike as of midnight on July 14. This announcement was followed by an emotional speech from SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher, who celebrated the history being made thanks to the union's largest strike authorization vote in history.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The SAG-AFTRA Strike Will Hugely Impact Hollywood The SAG-AFTRA strike order will have immediate repercussions both large and small in Hollywood. When combined with the ongoing 2023 writers strike, it will result in the immediate shutdown of productions across the globe. Up until now, productions with completed scripts were still able to shoot, but that won't be the case as of midnight.
Many planned productions are going to be delayed until the issue can be resolved by the AMPTP. There are also a large number of ongoing productions that will be interrupted by this strike order. Included on that list are Mortal Kombat 2, Wicked, and Gladiator 2. In addition to halting productions, the SAG-AFTRA strike means that actors also cannot participate in promotional events for their movies and television shows. In fact, the Oppenheimer cast already walked out of the movie's London premiere in anticipation of the strike.
