Joy Yvonne Jones’ solo play tells the legendary Egyptian queen’s story from her own perspective
Joy Yvonne Jones in costume for her solo play “Cleopatra,” being produced at Moxie Theatre by Moxie and Loud Fridge Theatre Group. During her time at the University of Minnesota’s Guthrie Theatre actor training program, Joy Yvonne Jones’ professor posed a question to her class: “If Shakespeare had the option to turn on the light, would he have continued to perform in the dark with candles?”
“Cleopatra” is directed by Andréa Agosto, adapted and performed by Jones, and co-produced by San Diego’s Loud Fridge Theater Group. “In the story called ‘Antony and Cleopatra,’ we hear more about Antony’s side, we hear more about Caesar’s side and how they feel about her, around her. But we really don’t get to see the intimate feelings of Cleopatra,” Jones said.
“I have been overly sexualized, things have been assumed about me that are absolutely false but no one takes the time to get to know me,” Jones said. “They see the picture and they fill in their own ideas.” Jones said her shows in Houston served as a practice run of sorts, gauging audience participation and setting the stage for a grander production. The length of the show, for instance, was extended by 16 pages and 45 minutes from its original 30 minute running time.
