The actor best known for his roles in Woody Allen films and his appearances in numerous Broadway musicals has died at the age of 85. Robert's genial stage personality was perfect for musical comedy , and he originated roles in diverse Broadway productions like 'How Now, Dow Jones,' 'Sugar,' 'Victor/Victoria,' 'Xanadu,' and 'The Royal Family.' He was also a regular presence in Woody Allen 's films, often playing the role of Allen's best friend.
His notable performances include 'Don't Drink the Water,' 'Play It Again, Sam,' 'Annie Hall,' 'Stardust Memories,' 'A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy,' 'Hannah and Her Sisters,' and 'Radio Days.' Roberts recalled a complicated scene in 'A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy' that Allen shot repeatedly to achieve his desired effect. He commented on Allen's artistry, noting that nothing in his work was accidental. His Broadway career spanned decades, with appearances in numerous successful productions including 'Barefoot in the Park,' 'Promises, Promises,' 'They're Playing Our Song,' and the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of 'Cabaret.'
