Activists call for national policy on teen pregnancies, but govt says measures are in place
A group of activists has signed an online petition calling on government to introduce a policy that would require medical professionals to report adolescent pregnancies.
Tshwale, therefore, said it was mandatory that healthcare providers report any cases of every pregnant woman, especially teenagers, that point to rape and abuse. “If a woman is possibly in danger, healthcare workers should walk her over to the social worker's office, make the introduction and hand over for further management. If the social worker is not available, the health worker refers the pregnant woman to a trauma counsellor, psychiatric nurse or psychologist,” he said.
