Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse rakes in an opening weekend that exceeds expectations and rises to become the third-best in the entire franchise.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is swinging into a dazzling opening weekend. The animated film is the sequel to the Oscar-winning 2018 outing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which introduced Miles Morales to a multiverse of different versions of himself. The new film, which opened on June 2, sees Miles reunite with Spider-Gwen to team up with even more Spideys to take down a brand-new villain.

Per Deadline, the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse box office opening weekend is exceeding expectations. Every day the projections have risen even more until it has reached its closing 3-day total of $120.5 million. This is the third-best opening weekend for the entire ten-film franchise, behind 2007's Spider-Man 3 and 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home .

This opening weekend for Across the Spider-Verse is an astonishing feat, raking in nearly three-and-a-half times the original film's opening weekend of $35.3 million. Sony is likely thanking their lucky stars that they already have a follow-up film in the cards.

So far, the trilogy-capping movies in previous Spider-Man universes have had the best opening weekends of them all. While this didn't translate to a huge overall gross in the case of Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently the third highest-grossing film of all time. Should Across the Spider-Verse continue its upward climb beyond week one, Beyond the Spider-Verse could very well be in contention to join the all-time list as well, smashing records.

It remains to be seen how Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse performs as the weeks go by. It does face some major competition this month with the release of Pixar's Elemental and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. However, with this incredible opening and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95 percent, its worldwide box office could shoot into the stratosphere before long.
