President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to noncitizen parents.

The executive order came amid a major immigration crackdown aimed at stemming a tide of illegal migrants entering the country. Trump also used his signature to declare a national emergency at the southern border and designate gangs and cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.The ACLU and immigrants’ rights advocates argue, however, Trump’s order may violate the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.
The ACLU called on the court to declare Trump’s order unconstitutional and to bar the order from being enforced. We will not let this attack on newborns and future generations of Americans go unchallenged. The Trump administration's overreach is so egregious that we are confident we will ultimately prevail,” he added.
