Two elite footballers explain their decisions to come out as non-binary and, in the case of Tori Groves-Little, have gender-affirming top surgery, which involves removing breast tissue and contouring the chest.

When Tori Groves-Little had gender-affirming top surgery, they wondered how their AFLW teammates would react to them being shirtless in the change rooms or during recovery sessions.during their career at the Gold Coast Suns, and for months had wanted to have the surgery, a major procedure that involves removing the breast tissue and contouring the chest.

Just last week, Hawthorn captain and midfielder Tilly Lucas-Rodd posted a video on Hawthorn’s website and social media channels about their decision to come out as non-binary.In Groves-Little’s case, they first had to save up the money for the surgery, which can cost between $5000 and $20,000, depending on the surgeon and the level of health insurance coverage.

“Before I did my first contact session, I think it was about like three months or something because I was just so scared. I spent so much money on getting a chest, I was so scared that I would wreck it or something. Lucas-Rodd works in a school in Melbourne’s north, which has gender-diverse staff and students, and gradually came out there first after changing their pronouns in their email signature.

“But I also, then again, don’t feel like a male and don’t align with that label. So, the best way to describe it is non-binary, and that in-between and that fluidity within gender is where I fit in.
