ACCC seeking ‘record penalty’ for Qantas

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission plans to seek a “record penalty” in their federal court action against Qantas.

The ACCC is taking Australia’s national carrier to court over alleged “deceptive conduct” that impacted “thousands of customers” who had purchased tickets for flights that were scheduled to depart between May and July 2022.

But Ms Cass-Gottlieb said the consumer watchdog’s case was about the airline’s conduct after the flights had been cancelled, rather than the cancellations themselves.

In a statement released earlier on Thursday, Ms Cass-Gottlieb said the court action against Qantas had arisen after a detailed investigation into the company’s flight cancellation practices – sparked by as many as 1,300 complaints over the past year.
