Academy member blasts 'toothless' 10 year Oscars ban for Will Smith and says star should return best actor gong
Harry Lennix, 57, compared the Academy's penalty of Will Smith to 'an extended time out for a playground bully'. The actor and Academy member said Smith should voluntarily return his Oscar. Smith, 53, is barred from attending any Academy events for the next 10 years but he can keep his Oscar, according to the Academy's recent decision.
The actor had already resigned from the Academy, said he 'respects and accepts' the decision for him to be banned. The academy's 9,000 members had been 'completely split' how the star should have been punished. Smith slapped host Chris Rock on March 27 for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith's shaved head caused by alopecia.
