A 17-year-old is in custody, charged with aggravated child abuse and chemical endangerment after police were notified of a 4-year-old with signs of physical abuse and who tested positive for drugs.
Mobile police said officers were dispatched to USA Children and Women’s Hospital about 9 p.m. on a report of a “severely injured” child with multiple injuries and extensive bruising. Police did not specify which drug was found in the child’s system. Monday afternoon, investigators identified the primary suspect -- a 17-year-old male who frequently serves as a babysitter for the child’s mother. He was located and taken into custody, later transported to Mobile Metro Jail. His identity has not been released because he is a minor. In addition, the Alabama Department of Human Resources is working with investigators to determine the full set of circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure the child’s well-being, according to police.
