China's top military official General Zhang Youxia has declared there would be 'absolutely no mercy' for any supporters of Taiwanese independence, as he warned the United States against interfering in the country.

The DPP under current President Tsai Ing-wen has sought to distance itself further from China, instituting a number of policies aimed at diversifying its trade and diplomatic relations away from Beijing. However, the party also contains pro-independence elements, including the faction through which Mr Lai emerged.

"Some countries, for fear that the world may stabilise, deliberately create turmoil, interfere in ­regional issues, interfere in other countries’ internal affairs and ­instigate colour revolutions," he said.
