Victoria Police have issued a plea in their hunt for a group of 'absolutely cowardly' young men accused of fleeing the scene of a deadly collision in Melbourne's eastern suburbs overnight.

A group of six people, believed to be teens, were travelling in an allegedly stolen black Jeep Grand Cherokee at high speed when they ploughed through an intersection and collided with a silver Toyota.Two 15-year-old girls travelling in the car, who are known to police, were arrested at the scene.Four men exited the Jeep and allegedly ran away from the crash site, fleeing through Burwood Park on foot, and discarding several pairs of gloves and items of clothing in the process.
“The impact was tremendous, it was a high seed impact – they know someone would have been hurt in that vehicle,” he said. “With a collision like this sometimes there are some silver linings, and we see the public acting in brave ways," he said.
