The latest move to give prisoners 'extra levels of comfort in times of need' while serving their jail sentence has received mixed reviews from Victorians.

Corrections Victoria has approved the trauma teddies, typically used to comfort children suffering from illness, to help inmates with mental health struggles.

However, prisoners’ rights advocacy group spokesperson Brett Collins said the measure could be really helpful for those suffering from mental health issues or currently on suicide watch. Mr Collins did acknowledge the measure was only effective for certain groups, as inmates risked being targetted, mocked or bullied by requesting the bears.

Corrections Victoria declared being “excited” as they announced the initiative in the Corrections Weekly newsletter.
