A total of 721 schools, out of 2,679 schools, were closed as of 3 p.m. Monday, state education department spokesperson Mike Yaple told NJ Advance Media. It is possible that the total of still-closed schools is even lower, since some included on the state’s list had been scheduled to reopen Monday.The state’s list includes public schools, public charter/renaissance schools, and approximately 140 state-approved private schools for students with disabilities that also serve public school students.amid a huge surge in COVID-19 cases driven by the omicron variant.
