Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town says childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 14 and remains a global health issue.
However, childhood cancer is different from adult-type cancers and responds better to chemotherapy, leading to better outcomes.
Two years later, little Molemo, now five, beat leukaemia after undergoing treatment at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital's Zakithi Nkosi Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Clinic. Modibogo added she started noticing something was wrong with Molemo as she coughed a lot and spent most of her time sleeping.
She said the doctors explained everything about cancer, and her child started with chemotherapy as she was still in the middle stages.Meanwhile, Razia Wilson, 14, of Valhalla Park in Cape Town, was 10 years old when she was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma at Tygerberg Hospital.Neuroblastoma is an aggressive childhood cancer that is most often diagnosed in children under the age of three. It added most children already have metastatic or widespread disease when diagnosed with this cancer.
"Her fever persisted for several weeks. Desperate, I took her to a private doctor who referred us to Bishop Lavis Day Hospital, but she was rushed to Tygerberg Hospital. By this time, she had a swollen stomach." I was shocked and cried for days. I eventually stopped to be strong for my daughter. My mother was very supportive during this time and is still our pillar of strength.
"She is in complete remission and is doing very well. She attends the paediatric oncology survivor clinic at the hospital every year to monitor her health," she added.
