Ms Plibersek has faced considerable criticism for her decision to block the mine, however she has argued the $1 billion project can still go ahead if it moves on to an alternate location for the dam. "This proof of occupation and use of that site directly correlates to the intangible cultural heritage of the area. So, that's the creation and dreaming stories and the song lines," he said.

The company has rejected suggestions it could use other proposed sites for the tailings dam, with Regis CEO Jim Beyer claiming it could take up to a decade for new approvals at a different location.
