First Nations people across Queensland are reacting to the new government's stand on truth-telling.

Aunty Peggy took many of her lived experiences to her grave, but her memory lives on in the many documents the state kept on her life.In the early 1930s, Aunty Peggy spent her pre-teens playing by the crystal-clear waters of her Quandamooka homeland, helping her grandfather haul his dugong catch and playing with her friends on the beach.WARNING: This story contains images of First Nations people who have are no longer with us.

The documents are a telling reflection of how Aboriginal women were controlled by governments, Aunty Peggy's daughter Quandamooka woman Cheryl Jacob explained. Aunty Peggy passed away in 1997, but her daughter is worried stories like hers may remain untold now that Queensland's Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry has been put on pause. On Thursday, the new Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said his government "won't be allowing" planned on-country hearings for the legislated inquiry on Stradbroke Island in December.

"So had no contact with the premier or his office before the press conference , or subsequent to that," the Waanyi and Kalkadoon man and barrister said. The decision to pause the formal process won't stop community members from gathering for the planned information session on Stradbroke Island on Saturday.

"The basic human rights are being quietened again, we are being controlled because of a political game I guess," the Wakka Wakka and Wangan leader said.
